07 August 2011: Forests are one of Cambodia's most important natural resources. Kragnoung, a hard and beautiful wood, is considered as the royalty of forest wood. Due to high demand, there is growing concern that Kragnoung could become extinct soon. There are growing signs that illegal logging is ravaging this natural resource of the Cambodian people, with allegations that even Luxury cars are used to transport Kragnoung trees that were logged in contravention of existing regulations.
The competent authority, The Forestry Administrative Department, asserts it has taken measures against these unlawful acts. However, there are allegations that these measures are applied selectively, i.e., they are only enforced on average citizens. Equity Weekly looks at the role of the Forestry Administrative Authority in managing Cambodia’s forests and its plans to ensure this important resource is still available for future generations of Cambodians.
