Rice Export

234_Big_Topic29 April 2012: Cambodia plans to export one million tons of rice by 2015. According to the Ministry of Commerce, last year Cambodia exported almost 150-thousand tons of rice, 90 per cent to Europe, it’s biggest market. But some experts argue that the country faces many challenges on its way to achieving its goal, including lack of machinery for drying rice, high electricity and transportation costs as well as small rice mills operating below high quality standards.

Border development

233_Big_Topic22 April 2012: The village of Samdach Akah Morha Seina Padei Dechor Hun Sen was established in 2009. At the moment 1,871 families – mostly from the military – live here. They came as part of a government-sponsored plan to develop areas along Cambodia’s border. They had to relocate from a village near the Preah Vihear temple when the site became a UNESCO world heritage site. But almost 3 years after their relocation, residents of this border community still lack water and basic resources to survive. Their children are also in an educational limbo since the only schools are too far from their community.
