27 November 2011: The lack of clean water for daily consumption in rural areas causes many serious health problems. Only 4% of Cambodia’s rural population has access to clean water supply. Water sources include rainwater, underground water and water from lakes, rivers and streams. Arsenic has been discovered in underground water in some provinces including Kampong Cham, Prey Veng, Kampong Thom, Kandal, Kampong Chhnang, Kratie and some areas around Phnom Penh along Mekong River and Tonle Sap. We look at the formation of arsenic, its effects on people and possible solutions. As part of a commitment to help resolve these problems, the Ministry of Rural Development has set a goal to supply clean water to all people living in rural areas by 2025. We examine the progress so far.
