Diabetes

234_Small_Topic29 April 2012: With a population of over 13 million, a surprisingly high number of Cambodians suffer from diabetes. A 2010 survey showed that as many as 2.9 percent of Cambodians aged between 25-64 had diabetes. In Cambodia, the majority of patients go undiagnosed. There are very few hospitals specializing in diabetes treatment in the country. Equity Weekly looks into the reasons behind Cambodia’s high incidence of diabetes.

Clean water systems and arsenic

212_Big_Topic27 November 2011: The lack of clean water for daily consumption in rural areas causes many serious health problems. Only 4% of Cambodia’s rural population has access to clean water supply. Water sources include rainwater, underground water and water from lakes, rivers and streams. Arsenic has been discovered in underground water in some provinces including Kampong Cham, Prey Veng, Kampong Thom, Kandal, Kampong Chhnang, Kratie and some areas around Phnom Penh along Mekong River and Tonle Sap. We look at the formation of arsenic, its effects on people and possible solutions. As part of a commitment to help resolve these problems, the Ministry of Rural Development has set a goal to supply clean water to all people living in rural areas by 2025. We examine the progress so far.

Blood Donation

207_Big_Topic23 October 2011: Blood donation for saving the lives of fellow Cambodians. A recent campaign saw public and private sector workers come together with students in Phnom Penh to donate their blood for Cambodian hospitals.  But some people remain hesitant to donate, citing concerns about whether their blood reaches the neediest patients, whether it is free, and if there are any negative health impacts for donors? Another problem has emerged however, with some people regularly selling their blood to earn money to survive.
