Khmer Rouge Tribunal’s troubles

Print PDF

238_Small_Topic27 May 2012: The Khmer Rouge Tribunal was established to prosecute and try the most senior and most responsible members of the Khmer Rouge. It was established as part of an agreement between the Royal Government of Cambodia and the United Nations and its members include both local and foreign judges. But the tribunal has experienced a series of setbacks after the resignations of 3 international co-judges who claim that their investigations have been stonewalled by their local counterparts. Human rights activists and legal experts see this as a political move to stop the court from conducting further investigations that could end up involving current government officials.
