Legal controls for guesthouses (Feature)
According to local newspapers, guesthouses and hotels are frequently the location for suicide and crimes including murder, drug abuse, and drug and human trafficking. The Ministry of Tourism claims that in most cases such crimes occur in establishments without proper licenses. Civil society has criticized what they say is collusion of guesthouse owners with some officials who allow illegal guesthouses to keep operating. This week Equity Weekly asks whether the government has laws to control the guesthouse and hotel industry, and looks at what authorities can do to control illegal activities.
Land Concessions (Main Story)
While the process of social land concession is often appreciated by citizens, the granting economic land concessions has frequently led to people losing their farmland and to conflicts between residents and companies concerned. For instance, about 400 families in Amleang commune, Thporng district, Kampong Speu province lost more than 500 hectares of their farmland used for cultivated their annual crops after the government granted an economic land concession to Ly Young Phat company to farm sugar cane. These people have made many attempts to claim back their land. We look at possible solutions for these people and ask what the government should do to ensure that there is no conflict resulting from the granting of economic land concessions?
