Effective land use (Feature)
80 percent of Cambodians are farmers. Most Cambodian farmers still use traditional farming methods, which are dependent on rainfall and the quality of land to produce rice. Recently, some farmers have adopted new methods for more effective land use introduced by the Ministry of Agriculture and various NGOs. These include new farming techniques which promise to improve the livelihood of farmers. This week we investigate these new techniques for effective land use.
Migrant workers on boats (Main Story)
Although people are aware that migrating overseas for work brings many dangers, Cambodians are still leaving their homes to look for jobs overseas working on fishing boats. Most of these workers are from Prey Veng, Svay Rieng, Kratie, Steung Treng, or Banteay Meanchey province which borders Thailand. In most cases, workers follow others or are persuaded by intermediaries, taking on big risks without being well informed. We look at the factors that lead Cambodians to migrate overseas to look for work on boats and the particular risks faced by such migrant workers.
