Show 224: Environmental Pollution in Towns & Sand Dredging in Tatai, Koh Kong Province

Date of Broadcast: 19 February 2012

Environmental pollution in towns (Feature)

Although there have been no comprehensive studies on pollution in Cambodian towns, experts point to a number of factors contributing to an increase in environmental pollution including more vehicles and use of electronic equipment, construction of high buildings and overall industrial development. People report that they are facing many difficulties, especially from traffic related air pollution, where exhaust from vehicles makes it difficult to breathe. According to one expert, in Siem Reap town there are now nearly 6,000 cars and more than 100,000 motorbikes, excluding those that come from outside. We look at what measures can be taken by relevant institutions to mitigate environment pollution in urban areas.

Sand dredging in Tatai, Koh Kong province  (Main Story)

Environmental experts and citizens are among those concerned about the impact of sand dredging on Cambodian biodiversity, and on those whose livelihoods rely on fishing and eco-tourism. For instance, in Koh Andeth and Anlong Vak villages in Ta Tai commune, Koh Kong province, residents recently went on strike to protest sand dredging activities in the area. While dredging was stopped for short time, it was later re-started. Local authorities claim that an impact assessment was conducted before the activities were allowed. However, local residents argue that it still affects their lives and the surrounding environment, and are urging authorities to act to stop the sand dredging. We look at the possible solutions for these people and what relevant authorities can do to solve the problems.
