Show 243: Sibling Band & Carbon Credits

Date of Broadcast: 15 July 2012

Sibling band (Feature)

Love and heartbreak are the most common themes in Cambodian popular music. But would you listen to songs about education, social issues and HIV/AIDS? A local family hopes so. Eight brothers and sisters have formed a music band with the mission to increase awareness about social issues that affect young people.

Carbon credits (Main Story)

Cambodia is one of dozens of developing countries participating in carbon credit projects aimed at protecting forests. Under a mechanism known as REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation) developed countries can balance and reduce their carbon dioxide emissions by paying money to developing countries to preserve their forests. The countries that receive payment (carbon credits) can use that money for projects aimed at social and economic development. Can Cambodia balance its development goals with the protection of its forest amid an aggressive program of economic land concessions?
